Sanitary valve material testing, read before we machine

Sanitary valve material testing starts before anything is machined: every batch of incoming stainless steel is read on our own PMI spectrometers. A mill certificate says what a supplier believes. A spectrometer says what the bar in our rack is, and anything that reads wrong goes back.

The method

How sanitary valve material testing is done

What the check is there to find, what is actually done with the instrument, and what leaves the factory with the goods.

What it catches

  • Mixed grades — 304 delivered as 316L, which is the substitution a hygienic line cannot tolerate.
  • Off-specification heats that would fail a customer’s own incoming inspection.
  • Semi-finished blanks from a different batch than the one ordered.

How it is run

  • A handheld PMI spectrometer is put against the part and the composition read on the spot.
  • Raw material is read on arrival; blanks and finished parts are read again if a batch is ever in doubt.
  • The reading is taken in our own factory, by us — nothing is sent out to be verified.

  • An EN 10204 3.1 material certificate ships with every order.
  • Carbon content and mechanical test reports on request.

Measured against

  • EN 10204 3.1 and PMI(abre num separador novo) The inspection document a mill issues with a heat, and the handheld reading that checks the bar against it. We do both: the certificate travels with the order, the spectrometer proves it in our own rack.

Alloy is the one thing a buyer cannot check by eye on delivery, which is why it is the one we check first and record in writing.

Questions about material testing

Do you test every batch or a sample?
Every batch of incoming material is read before it is machined. Anything that reads wrong is rejected rather than used.
Can I have the material certificate with my order?
Yes. An EN 10204 3.1 certificate ships with every order, and carbon content or mechanical test reports can be supplied on request.
Which grades do you work in?
304 and 316L as standard, and both are read on the spectrometer before they are machined. If your specification calls for another grade, say so on the enquiry and we will tell you whether we can source and verify it.
What happens to a batch that reads wrong?
It goes back to the supplier. It is not machined, not set aside for a cheaper order, and not blended into a run — which is the whole reason the reading is taken before anything is cut rather than after.
Is a PMI reading the same as a mill certificate?
No. A mill certificate is a document about a heat of steel, written by whoever sold it. A PMI reading is what the bar in our own rack actually is. We ship the certificate and take the reading, because the two only agree when everyone upstream has been honest.
Can you test parts I already have?
Our testing covers what we make. If you need incoming material of your own verified, tell us with the enquiry and we will say whether we can put it on our instrument.
