What it catches
- Sanitary valve surface roughness that polishes out coarser on the product-contact face than the specification asks for.
- Batch-to-batch drift, where the same part leaves smoother one week and rougher the next.

How it is run
- The Ra instrument is run against the surface that matters — the inside of the part, not a flat outside face.
- Finished goods are measured as part of the re-check on at least 10% of the quantity.
- Polishing and measuring happen in the same building. A part that reads rough goes back to the belt, not into a crate.

Which surface is measured, the inside or the outside?
The inside — the product-contact face, which is the one a hygienic line is judged on. An outside face is easier to reach and tells you nothing about what the product touches.
What if a part reads rougher than specified?
It goes back to the belt, not into a crate. Polishing and measuring happen in the same building, so a part that reads wrong is re-worked and measured again the same day.
Can I have a roughness report with the goods?
Yes, on request with the order. The figure is recorded against the order in any case, so it can be supplied later as well.
Do you quote a polishing grade or a measured figure?
A measured figure. A polishing recipe describes what was done to a part; only an instrument says what the part came out at, and that is the number recorded against your order.
